Yard BullyYard Bully
Three Year Old Brown Colt

Yard Bully was purchased by the Highland Yard at the 2010 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Sire Lion Heart earned $1.3mm as a runner including a win in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. He was a big strong looking yearling at the sale. After 3 months at the farm, Yard Bully was brought into OJ’s stable to begin his training in February of 2011. If all goes well yard Bully will begin a breeze schedule in April and be ready for the races by this summer.

News

Aug 9
From bad to worse for Yard Bully and Highland Yard in recent weeks. Yard Bully broke alertly and took the lead with Russell Baze aboard on the turf at Santa Rosa last week. It would be his last time in a starting gate as he was pulled up by Baze at the 3/8'ths pole and vanned off the race course marking the end of his racing career. The second Highland Yard runner to fracture a bone in 5 weeks. The only positive news in this horrible situation is that the break is not life threatening. Baully was operated on yesterday and a deal has already been negotiatged to sell him as a quarter horse sire prospect for slightly more than the cost of the surgery. Given his often speedy starts and competitive drive that always had him in or near the money, he will hopefully be suited to this task. Farewell Bully you were always a favorite on our tote board. A chart of his last race can be found above.

Jul 28
Yard Bully will move to the turf for the first time in the starter allowance sprint at Santa Rosa on August 1st. The race drew a full field of 10 and Bully will break from post 6 with hall of fame jockey Russell Baze aboard. It looks like a farily competitive field and much will be detemined by who takes to the turf. We anticipate Yard Bully will go off as slight favorite or second choice in the race. Past Performances for the race can be found

here.

Jul 15
Yard Bully was scratched in the gate at Sacramento yesterday. In a ridiculous loading, King and two other horses in the five horse field were scratched leaving two horses to compete for the $20,000 purse. The three horse reared in the gate first causing a chain reaction that included Yard Bully also bucking in the gate. In a cautionary move three horses were scratched. O.J. reviewed Bully after the scratch and found nothing wrong with him. We should be able to re-enter him in the next couple of weeks likely at Santa Rosa. Not a good day for our colt or the loading staff at Cal Expo!

Jul 12
A quick two-week turn around for Yard Bully after an unusually poor effort last time out. Bully draws the inside again with Francisco Duran aboard. We'll have to beat the always tough Hollendorfer / Baze entry Worldly Lad to try and notch Yard Bully's first Allowance victory. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Jun 29
Things don't always work out as planned and Yard Bully's run yesterday at Pleasanton is testament to that. Despite going off as the slight favorite, Yard Bully didn't fire and had nothing left for the stretch run after running with the front pack for the first 1/2 mile. Jockey Duran said nothing felt wrong but Bully just didn't have anything in the tank. Myabe he doesn't like the dirt track at Pleasanton or maybe hr just had an off day. We'll just put this one behind us and target a race in 3 or 4 weeks time. A chart of the race can be found above.

Jun 25
Yard Bully has been installed as the slight favourite at 8/5 in the 6 Furlong Allowance Sprint at Pleasanton this Thursday. Jockey Francisco Duran retains the mount after getting caught at ther wire last time out. The field came up small at five horses and Yard Bully drew the inside post. There does not appear to ber as much speed in the race as Yard Bully has faced recently and we anticipate he will, as usual, break to the front.  Hopefully he can relax there and be under a little less pressure than in previous races and have lots left for the stretch run. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

May 24
Yard Bully ran an excellent race today at GGF only to get caught on the wire by who else but Russell Baze on the 3/5 favorite Planet Sunshine. Bully had to break fast to overcome the inside post and was pressured on the front end by eventual third place finisher Pale Outlaw. The two of them went a sizzling first quarter in 21.67 seconds. Despite the fast 1st quarter Bully wore down his foe and took the lead down the stretch. The favored stalking horse under the expert ride of Baze just got up to catch Bully at the wire in a photo finish. The good news is Planet Sunshine moves on and Bully beat the theird place horse by 4 lengths and will be very tough in this condition next time out. Bully has never finished worse than 4th on a race in his 10 life time starts. He is a gamer. A chart of the race can be found above.

May 23
Yard Bully should be well rested for tomorrows Starter Allowance at GGF. Bully drew the tough 1st post in a field of 7 for the 5 1/2 furlong sprint. Bully has faded a bit the last two starts at 6 furlongs and may benefit from this slightly shorter distance. Francisco Duran gets the mount and Bully is the morning line 2nd favorite at 5/2. Past performances for the race can be found here.

April 23
Yard Bully suffered another close loss fading to 4th in the deep stretch after challenging the eventual winner the whole race in second place. This makes five times Bully has lossed by less than two lengths. He has never finished worse than 4th in his nine career races but has only one win to show for his efforts. Nothing to do but reload and train hard at this same level in a months time. A chart of the race can be found above.

April 18
Yard Bully has been in the money in 6 of 8 career starts. There is no reason to believe he won't be again this Saturday in the 6 furlong Allowance for three year olds at GGF. Bully drew post position 4 of 7 for this sprint. The race came up a little soft as Summer Hit who beat Bully last time out has shipped to run at Santa Anita. This leaves us in a good position to score. Having said that the second place horse last time out returns and anther Hollendorfer / Baze horse will be in the starting gate. O.J. convinced me to give the kid Martinez a return ride after riding Indy poorly last time out. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Mar 30
Yard Bully closed well to finish third in his first trip against winners yesterday at Golden Gate. Jockey Martinez had to pull Bully 4 wide entering the stretch to make a run that came up a bit short. Winning Jockey Russell Baze had Bully trapped in on the rail and as he iold us after the race "wanted to keep him there". We aren't the first to be outsmarted by Baze but it still hurts. We think Yard Bully will win at this level with a slightly better trip having only lost by 1 1/2 lengths in this one. We will try and get Baze back on him next time out! A chart of the race can be found above.

Mar 24
Yard Bully drew post position 4 of 7 for Thursday's Starter Allowance sprint at GGF. Yard Bully has been training exceptionally and has the best speed figure of the group going into the race. A bit of a grudge match in this one as Russell Baze who rode Yard Bully to victory last time out dropped us to ride Hollendorfer's Summer Hit in this one. Catalino Martinez gets the mount. Would be a sweet win for us. Past performances for this race can be found here.

Mar 02
Yard Bully "trounced the field" according to Golden Gate track announcer Michael Wrona today. Yard Bully led at every calling to win by 5 1/2 lengths and show that he can carry his speed through a whole race. Adding $9,900 to his win total and placing himself for an Allowance test next time out. Hall of Fame jockey Russel Baze said he just had to "keep one foot on each side of the horse" for this impressive victory. A chart of the race can be found above.

Mar 01
Yard Bully has been installed as 7/5 favorite and Daily Racing Form choice for tomorrows 6th race high level maiden claimer at GGF. A Highland Yard contingent will be in the Turf Club cheering him and Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze on. Go Bully!

Feb 26
Yard Bully has drawn post position 1 of 7 for Friday's high level maiden claimer at GGF. Yard Bully will be the likely favourite as he tries to become the second Highland Yard runner to break his maiden in six days. Leading Jockey Russell Baze gets the mount. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Feb 12
The Highland Yard slump continues as Yard Bully finished 4th in the Maiden Special Weight at GGF yesterday. Bully broke well but got caught in a speed duel on the front end with the eventual 5th place finisher. Yard Bully fought hard to take the lead and carry it to the top of the stretch before being overtaken. He is a little horse and seems to have to work exra hard to carry his speed. We will drop him and try him against lesser next time out. Bully ran well but it wasn't enough agaisnt these. A chart of the race can be found above.

Feb 10
Yard Bully drew Post Position 4 of 6 for Saturday's Six Furlong Maiden Sprint at GGF. There is a big pot for this race and we could use the win. Yard Bully has been picked by the Daily Racing Form to win the race and is second favorite to a Hollendorfer first time starter by the House Handicap at GGF. Bully has the experience and form to compete very favorably against these. 50% in the money jockey Kerwin John who rode Bully last time out gets the call. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Jan 23

Yard Bully finsished third in his return to the races after a near five month layoff. Bully broke slowly but chased up the back stretch to be a closing second before fading a bit in the deep stretch. He ended up only 1 3/4 lengths behind the Hollendorfer trained Baze ridden favorite which bodes very well for next time out. Often a horse needs a race after a long lay off and Bully should benefit greatly from this in the money finish. Like his stable mate Jerry's Fever, Bully is developing a habit of being in the money but short of the winners circle. He is now been in the money in 4 of 5 career starts but has yet to break his maiden. If he comes out of the race well, we should see him at this level again (minus the winner who has to move on) in mid to late February. A chart of the race can be found above.

Jan 20

Yard Bully drew a full field of 10 for the six furlong MSW this Sunday at GGF. We are eager to see him back at the races and have selected hot jockey Kerwin John to ride Bully. Kerwin has been working him in the mornings and likes what he has. Our hopes are high but we have to realize a horse some times "needs a race" when coming off a long lay-off. Yard Bully has been in the money in three of four lifetime starts including a 6 length loss to subsequent California Derby winner Russian Greek. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Jan 01

Yard Bully had another excellent breeze yesterday going 5 furlongs in 1:01 flat, 2nd fastest of 27 at that distance. It looks like we are three or four weeks from getting back to the starting gate with this speedy son of Lion Heart. We are counting on some solid pay cheques from him in 2012. He looks like a differn't colt after his four month break from the races.

Dec 18

Yard Bully fired the bullet in training today being the fastest of 66 at 4 furlongs in 47 seconds flat. This was his third work back after layoff and he is showing excellent speed. He should be back at the races in 5 weeks time. We eagerly await his return.

Nov 1

Yard Bully returned to O.J.'s barn after two months off at Paradise Road Ranch. This colt has shown lots of guts and been knocking on the door to break his maiden finishing in the money in 3 of 4 races since his debut in June. We are hopeful the time off has allowed him to mature and enable a strong continuation to his racing career. If all goes well we would anticipate a return to the track prior to year end.

Aug 28

Yard Bully finished a dissapointing 3rd as the odds on favorite at GGF. We didn't learn much about the colt this race as he was boxed in and never givien the opportunity to make a run down the stretch. It was definetly not jockey Antongeorgi's best ride as heading for home we were trapped behind wily veteran Baze's mount and a horse to the outside of him. Bully had to "check up" in mid-stretch with no room to run and the race was over. The 3-5 favorite should not be in that position coming for home. A horse that Yard Bully beat last time out finished 2nd in the higher class MSW race yesterday.

We will reload in four weeks time probably at this level again. A chart of the race can be found above.

Aug 27

Yard Bully drew post position 2 of 6 for tomorrows 6 furlong Maiden Claimer at GGF. He has been installed at s the 8-5 favorite for the race which includes three first time starters. This should be a very good spot for Yard Bully and we are expecting a good performance. Post time is 2:19 pm

and is the 4th race on the card. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Jul 30

Yard Bully ran 3rd as the beaten favorite in a 6 furlong maiden special weight at Santa Rosa today. It is always dissapointing to lose as the favorite and today was no exception. Yard Bully was out sprinted to the first turn and then had to run 4 and then 5 wide for a good portion of the race. Giving up this much ground proved fatal in the race. Yard Bully did finish in the money and added some funds to his coffer. We hope he recovers well from this race and can break his maiden next time out.

Jul 10

Yard Bully ran a solid 4th in his first stakes attempt yesterday. Breaking from the outside 7th post with even money race favorite "Galex" to his inside Jockey Antongeorgio had to hussle Bully up just to get in contention. A four wide stalking trip the whole way took a little to much out of our colt as he faded to 4th from 2nd down the lane. Certainly no shame in this effort and $3,100 for his efforts. My view is that with a better post he would have been in the money.

Yard Bully will be well positioned to strike at the next Maiden Special Weight opportunity as the top three finishers and the 5th place horse are ineligible for this conditiion. Pleased with the effort and already looking forward to Bully's next time out.

Jul 6

The little colt will try it again on Saturday in the Alameda County Stakes. Antongeorgi keeps the mount. Bully will be in tough agaisnt the top two-year okds in Northern California including Galex who beat him in his debut. We are very much looking forward to seeing what he can do stretching out to 5 1/2 furlongs after he was scratched in the gate last time out. Past performances cn be found here.

Jul 4

Yard Bully breezed a brisk 5 fulrongs in one minute and 4/5ths of a second on Sunday whioch was 6th of 51 for the distance and fastest of the 13 two-year olds. He has also been taken to the gate a number of times to get him more use to that environment after last weeks debacle. We have nominated and expect Bully to run in the $50,000 Alameda Handicap next weekend. We will post past performances when available.

Jun 28

Yard Bully reared in the gate and struck her foreleg over the rail causing the dislodging of the jockey. It is common for the stewards to scratch a horse in this situation despite no obvious injury to the horse. Bully came off the track well and has not exhibited any injury. O.J. will take him for more gate work and we will prep him for a future race in one or two weeks time. We are considering entering him in the two year old stakes race at Pleasanton on July 9th. The competion will be tough but he is ready to run and had been training well in advance of Sundays scratch. All-in-all part of a lost weekend for Highland Yard.

Jun 25

Yard Bully drew post position 8 of 9 for Sundays Maiden Special Weight at Pleasanton. Included in the field are two horses Bully beat last time out. Of course Hollendorfer and Baze bring a $175,000 yearling purchase that also finished second in his debut in a similiar time to Bully. Should be a good race and we expect Yard Bully to be right in the hunt despite the wide post. Bill Antongeorgi gets the call to ride yard Bully. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Jun 19

Yard Bully breezed 4 furlongs on Saturday in 48 3/5ths seconds which was 8th of 38 and the fastest of the four 2 year olds at that distance.

He will be entered with Bill Antongeorgio aboard for the MSW at Pleasanton to be run next Sunday June 26th going 5 furlongs.

Jun 10

Yard Bully finished second today in his debut. The race went in a speedy time of 51.75 seconds just .45 seconds off of the track record and .25 seconds faster than the other MSW 2 year old heat today. He broke a half step slow but quickly regained stride as Jockey Antongeorgi hustled him up three wide to vie for the early lead. Bully kept some pressure on the Hollendorfer trained favorite "Galex" before succumbing in the final two furlongs. Galex was much the best but Yard Bully a clear second. Most impressively Bully veered a bit in the lane but regathered and made a strong finish holding off and perhaps increasing his lead to the other challengers.

Yard Bully looked small in the paddock compared to his opponents but lived up his name nonetheless. Bully was the little colt who could today and earned $5,600 for his efforts.

Thrilled with his debut and looking forward to breaking his maiden at Pleasanton in 4 weeks or so.

A chart of the race can be found here.

Jun 10

Yard Bully has been installed at 12-1 for his debut today. Given six of the seven are first time starters we are not worried about the high odds. He has been training relatively well and we look for a good first time out for him today. The race is at 1:15 pm PST and can be seen at calracing.com.

Jun 07

Yard Bully's debut will be in the 4.5 Furlong, $28,000 Maiden Special Weight this Friday in the second race (Post Time 1:15 pm) at Golden Gate Fields.  A field of  seven has drawn into the race, six of which have never raced. Hard to pick among this group as many have trained well and a couple were purchased for high prices as yearlings or two-year olds in training. Of course Hollendorfer has one in here. Very exciting to see Yard Bully who we bought as a yearling make it to the track .

For past performances for the race click here.

May 31

Yard Bully breezed 5 furlongs in a respectable 1:01 and 1/5th seconds from the gate on Saturday which was 10th of 28 at that distance.

He is ready to race and we will enter him in the Two-Year Old Maiden Special Weight going 4.5 furlongs on Friday, June 10th. We will try and obtain Bill Antongeorgi, who was on Yard Bully for the breeze to ride.

May 22

Yard Bully breezed his first 4 furlongs in 48 4/5ths seconds which was 14th of 89 at that distance and the fastest of the 2 year olds.

He continues to train well in advance of his likely first start June 10 or 11 in either the Lost in the Fogs Stakes or a $28,000 Miaden Special Weight going 4.5 furlongs.

May 16

Yard Bully breezed 3 furlongs from the gate in a very fast 36 and 3/5ths yesterday morning. This work was his first from the gate and 3rd of 31 at this distance. His time was the fastest of all two year olds. We have a very fast colt who seems to be precocious enough to start at a high level. We are contemplating entering him in the $50,000 Lost in the Fog Stakes for 2 year-olds to be run on June 11th at GGF. This stakes race early in the season has been won by first time starters before. We will see how Yard Bully works over the next two weeks before making a final decision.

May 09

Yard Bully breezed 3 furlongs aside stablemate Wee Highland Lass in 36 seconds flat on Sunday. This brisk work was 4 of 30 at the distance and shows potential for our son of Lion Heart. This was the first work where Yard Bully held off the filly. We are only 4 or 5 weeks from a debut for "Bully" should things progress as planned. O.J. is of the view Bully has the build and demeanaor of a sprint horse that should excel at distances of 6 furlongs or shorter. The anticipation builds.
