A Kings LifeTaffeta Disaster
Three Year Old Bay Filly

Taffeta Disaster was purchased by Highland Yard at the 2011 Barrett’s October Yearling Sale. The ticket was written for $32,000 which we believe to be good value for this Unusual Heat filly out of the Cozzene mare Fleet Sparrow. Unusual Heat is the uncontested top California Sire currently with progeny earnings in excess of $30,000,000. Taffeta is full brother to Graded Stakes placed Medzendeekron who won just under $350,000 at the track.

Taffetta Disaster was broken at Randy Leighton’s Running Horse Equine Center and was delivered to O.J.’s barn in early May of 2012. She has put on some muscle and height as expected and is a big filly for two years old. She will begin light training with no firm timetable to make it to the races. If all were to go well perhaps a late summer start for Taffeta is possible.

Taffeta Disaste
was claimed away from Highland Yard for $20,000 yesterday at Golden Gate Fields. We were not happy to see her go especially after running a vastly improved 3rd of 11 after setting the pace the whole way. We have likely underestimated her value as a brood-mare and anticipate the new buyers who train with Peter Miller at Hollywood Park likely have designs to breed Taffeta Disaster after her racing career. This filly has a special place in our hearts as she was named by someone very dear to us. So long Taffy we will be watching your career from afar.

Taffeta Disaste
r returns to the Golden Gate Turf on Sunday for the 1 1/16th route. Jockey Alejandro Gomez retains the mount. Taffeta has dropped to the Maiden $20,000 claiming level and should be more competitive with this bunch. Taffeta has drawn post 8 of 11 and been installed at 8-1 in the morning line. We are pleased that she tried late last outing against better and believe she has the capability to be in the money this trip. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Taffeta Disaste
r ran a bit green in her comeback race at GGF yesterday. Jockey Gomez commented that it took her a while to get used to the turf which she had never experienced before. After starting and competing well through a half mile she faded to ninth and looked like she was done. The big positive of this race is that she tried hard down the lane and moved up into 7th spot. Certainly nothing tremendous but if the horse didn't try we would be in a deep hole. At the end of the day this was a very deep, experienced and tough group of three year old fillies all with much more exoerience than Taffeta. We will see how she comes out of the race and find a nice spot for her at the upper maiden claiming level. A chart of the race can be found above.

Taffeta Disaster will return to the races for the first time since September on Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. She has been training very
well and we lok forward to see what she can do in her return. The race drew very tough with 12 starters including four who raced at Santa Anita last time out and two who finished 2nd at this condition last race. Alejandro Gomez gets the mount. We have a feeling Taffeta will outrun her odds in this race. Past performances for the race can be found here.

After three months on the sidelines, Taffeta Disaster was back on the work tab breezing 3 furlongs in 36 4/5ths which was 4th of 24 at that distance. She is in good spirits and the healing of her nasty laceration is almost complete. We hope to see her back at the races in March.

Oct 10
Taffeta Disaster threw her rider and bolted during training last week. She left the race track which is always a dangerous situation. She slipped and slid doing no damage to any bone, muscle or ligament but causing very painful lacerations and scrapes. She has been stitched up and is out at the farm for one month's time. This set back should have no lasting effect on her racing ability.

Taffeta Disaster showed very little in her debut in the Maiden Sprint at GGF last weekend. We knew shew didn't have any speed and she proved it breaking essentially last in the 9 horse field and running evenly throughout. She will be better going two turns and we will train her accordingly. A chart of the race can be found above.

Out two-year old Unusual Heat filly Tafetta Disaster makes her debut this Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Nine horses drew in this maiden race, six of which have racing experience. Tafetta has trained well but not shown a ton of speed and is destined to be a two-turn route horse. Nonetheless she has to start somewhere and will benefit greatly from the race. Jockey Daviod Lopez gets the mount from post position 6. We have made an ethical decision to try racing her without Lasix the anti-bleeding medication that has been linked to improved performance. There is a group of owners that have agreed to try and race their two-year olds without Lasix and we are giving it a try. We hope to see her run well, get use to being in traffic and take a positive step towards her later starts over a mile distance or longer. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Taffeta Disaster worked 4 furlongs in 48 and 2/5ths which was 7th of 69 yesteray at GGF. This will be her last work before her long awaited debut next Sunday in a Maiden Special Weight for 2 Year Old Fillies. She has trained professionally but has not shown a lot of speed and is likely to develop into a two turn horse who likes a route of ground. Nonetheless, she needs to start some where and we hope she performs admirably next weekend. Entries go in this Wednesday.

Jun 28

Taffeta Disaster has been training professionally and will be pointed to a Maiden race over the next 6 weeks.
