Golden ChildGolden Child
Four Year Old Bay Colt

Golden Child was claimed in a three-way shake out of a $32,000 Maiden Claiming race at Golden Gate Fields. Golden Child went on to win that race. Golden Child is an Oregon Bred but the son of top California Sire In Excess and thus will be eligible to run in races for Cal Breds. Golden Child had an exemplary work pattern going into the race and we decided to take a chance on him.

In Excess is an Irish Bred who has sired 49 stakes winners most notably Kentucky Derby placed and top-sire Indian Charlie. Golden Child is out of the Strike Gold mare Fourteen Karyot.

News

Aug 6
Golden Child had succesful surgery at San Francisco Equine last week and is recovering well. We will let her convalesce for a few months before finding a second home for him, likely at Whispering Pines. It is important to do the right thing with these beautiful animals after their racing career ends.

July 27
Golden Child broke his sesmoid this morning in training at Del Mar. After a very good work he apparently stumbled. He will come back to Northern California for surgery and will recuperate at Paradise Road Ranch. He will be retired from the racetrack to, hopefully, change careers. Shock and disspointment for us this morning.

July 22
Golden Child was shipped to Delmar this morning with promising stablemate Amaranth. After a strong breeze on Sunday (6th of 117 over 5 furlongs) Golden Child will be given a chance to compete on the big stage. Ther is an allowance race for Cal breds only for which he qualfies. We expect he will be a long shot but the purses are big!

June 30
We knew it was going to be tough but Golden Child ran poorly and has not had a decent run since his accident some months ago, certainly the outside post of 10 horses did not help. We will now drop Golden Child to the claiming ranks and see if we can pick up a win at Sacramento. More and more it looks like we will need our young two-year old crop to provide some excitement and some wins for the Blue and White of Highland Yard. A chart of the race can be found above.

June 27
Golden Child drew post position 10 of 10 for another tough allowance race this Saturday. He will need to revert to his pre-accident form to have a chance against this tough field. He has had one good breeze since his last come back effort and we are hoping for better Saturday. Golden Child has been installed at 15-1 morning line. Past performances for the race can be found here.

June 18
A dissapointing day for Golden Child who finished laat in a tough fleld of allowance horses at Golden Gate Fields last weekend. After breaking reasonably well and making one mild bid four-wide he essentially stopped at the quarter mile pole. We knew he would need this race for conditioning but were still dissapointed with how outclassed he was. We will get him back on a breeze routine and will ensure he is in better fitness net time out. A chart of the race can be found above.

June 7
Golden Child drew post position 10 of 10 for Saturday's Allowance sprint at Golden Gate Fields. We are looking forward to his return to the track after dismounting Jockey Alvarado at the start last time out. Golden Child suffered a deep cut in the incident which has now healed and he has had two solid breezes in advance of this race. We debated saving him for a start a few weeks down the road but anticipate he will get alot from this race. The race came up very strong with three starters who have won or placed 2nd at this level returning. The outside post with Baze just one inside of us will not be easy. Alvarado returns for the mount. Past performances for the race can be found here.

May 29
Golden Child had his first breeze since his accident going an easy half mile in 49 4/5ths seconds which was 33rd of 49 on the day. He likely point to an Allowance sprint at Pleasanton on June 28th.

May 22
Golden Child's cut is healing well after some complications with infection. He has been jogging consistently now for a couple of weeks and will go back into training this week. If all goes as planned he will need about three breezes before he is ready to race again. We are hopeful that the accident April 13 will not effect his mental toughness and he will get back to his early form soon after returning to the races. We anticipate a start in about four weeks time.

Apr 13
What was a very exciting day with a sizeable contingent of Highland Yard supporters in the Golden Gate Fields clubhouse turned to shock as Golden Child spooked into the fence and unseated jockey Frank Alvarado just seconds into the race yesterday. There was much breath held as we awaited to see the plight of both jockey and horse. As it turned out things could have been much, much worse. Jockey Alvarado came back to win the 8th race on the card and Golden Child ran the full dsitance of the course and was gathered with little issue after the race. He sufffered a two inch gash on his left rear hock from hitting the fence which was stapled and stitched up by Dr. Coleman. The thinking at this point is just a couple weeks out of training. Better luck next time we hope. The chart of the race can be found above.

Apr 11
Golden Child will step up another notch in class on Saturday to face open allowance competition at Golden Gate Fields. A salty field of eight drew in for the 6 furlong sprint including "Malibu Rum" who has been second at this condition the last two times out and Santa Anita invader "Gnarly Dude". Golden Child has been training very well for the race including two handy 4 furlong works in 48 and 1/5th seconds. It should be a very competitive race with a nice purse at stake. Jockey Alvarado will be astride having won twice on Golden Child in hisonly two starts. We drew unfortunate post 1 of the 8 entered but hopefully Golden Child can overcome that disadvantage. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Mar 16
Golden Child returned from a ten month layoff to score in Starter Allowance company at Golden Gate Fields yesterday. This marks two wins from two starts for G.C. and an exciting future ahead. Given little respect on the tote board as fifth favorite of six, Golden Child won convincingly. Poised second after the break he kept near constant pressure on the Baze/Hollendorfer entry "Free Return" until passing him at the 3/8ths pole, he continued to increase his lead until tiring slightly over the last furlong which was somewhat expected given his first race back off the layoff. A n excellent job of training by O.J. to bring him back for the win after the long layoff. Next up for G.C. wil be either a first level allowance race at Golden Gate Fields or a Cal bred allowance at Santa Anita. The chances are good our son of In Excess will be seen at Delmar later this summer. An exciting win for sure! A chart of the race can be found above.

Mar 12
Golden Child drew post position 3 of 6 for his return race this Friday at Golden Gate Fields. It has been a long wait but G.C. has been training well and should compete favorably in this 5 1/2 furlong starter allowance. Frank Alvarado gets the mount and has been training on him for the last few weeks. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Feb 18
Golden Child is ready! Golden Child breezed a very strong 5 furlongs in 59 3/5ths second which was 2nd of 50 yesterday at Golden Gate Fields. Jockey Frank Avarado deemed him ready as did Trainer Jauregui. This was his 8th work in 8 weeks and he is all the way back from the surgery he had last summer to remove a bone chip. GC will be entered in a Starter Allowance going 5.5 fulrongs on Saturday, March 9th. Alvarado will get the mount.
We fully expect him to be competitive right back in his first race given then strength and consistency of his worls.

Jan 3
Golden Child had his first offical work in many months breezing 3 furlongs last Monday at Golden Gate Fields. O.J. said that she came out of the breeze fine and will begin a regular breeze schedule. Fingers crossed this speedy
son of In Excess will be back at the races in 8 weeks time.

Aug 9
Golden Child has gone under the knife to remove a bone chip or "OCD
". The surgery is a minor one as the chip was small and in a very accessbible location. He will go to the farm for about four months before going back in training. Bad things happen in three's and hopefully this along with the Yard Bully and Wee Highland Lassinjuries mark the end of  a bad stretch of luck for Highland Yard. Speedy recovery to G.C. we hardly knew yee!

Jun 28
Golden Child has been working very well and is pointed to make his debut in the Highland Yard colours in a Starter Allowance sprint at the Sacramento Fair.
