A Kings LifeA Kings Life
Four Year Old Colt

A Kings Life was purchased by Highland Yard at the 2009 California Cup Yearling sale. The first purchase by Highland Yard, King was an “eye-catcher” at the sale with both O.J. and Jeff Bloom of Westpoint Thoroughbreds spotting him as a sale standout among the other Cal Bred yearlings at the sale.

King’s Sire is French Bred Silic, who is best known for siring multiple stakes winner Gladiatorus who won the Dubai Duty Free Stakes and has earnings in excess of $3.5 million.

King has spent time after the sale “being a horse” and being broken at Efrain Guzman’s Once Over Farm in Morgan Hill. After gaining his foundation there King was shipped to O.J.’s barn at Golden Gate Fields in April of 2010. If all goes well, and King progresses with his gate training he could have his first official “breeze” in June or July and potentially start racing in the fall.

As a Cal Bred, King has the advantage of racing in restricted Cal Bred races and access to the additional purse money provided by the State’s purse bonuses for Cal Breds.

Oct 22
A King's Life has become a stallion and will stand at Brazeua Farms in California. Were suprised but pleased he has found a second career after carrying the Highland Yard Colors. Have fun in the breeding shed old boy.

Jul 13
A King's Life was claimed away from Highland Yard for $5,000 by Trainer Jeffrey Metz. A King's Life was our first ever purchase at the Barretts Yearling sale in 2009 and was a valiant competitor. We watched his development from being broken in the round pen, fighting through an early disease and eventually breaking his maiden at Golden Gate Fields. We wish the new connections luck with him and will be cheering him on from afar. King won just over $21,000 in his Highland Yard career including $950 for a fourth place finish yesterday from the dreaded and dead inside post at Sacramento. Good Luck King.
A chart of his race can be found above.

Jul 12
King drew post one of six for tomorrows 6 Furlong Claimer at the State Fair in Sacramento. We are hoping that the inside part of the track isn't

dead like it was at Pleasanton. King usually breaks well as he did in victory last time out with apprentice Jockey Richards who gets the mount

again tomorrow. King has been installed as 5-1 third favorite. We will be making our first trip to Sacramento where the purses have been increased for this meet. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Jun 24
Apprentice Jockey Richards beat favored Hall of Famer Russell Baze today in the sprint at Pleasanton. Atop King, Richards broke extremely well and rushed King into contention from the outside post. More importantly he didn't chase the lead horses but settled in a comfortable third for a nice ground saving trip through the first 4 furlongs. When he asked King for more he had it in spades and won by 1 1/2 lengths drawing off from the field. A great result and a fun afternoon at Pleasanton for the Highland Yard faithful. A chart of the race can be found above. A video of the race can be found for the next two days here.

Jun 22
A King's Life
drew unfortunate post 9 for Sunday's 5 furlong sprint at Pleasanton. The field drew tougher than we would have thought for King who is dropping in class for this one. Hopefully he can overcome the outside post with apprentice jockey Richards aboard and get a piece of the prize money. King has been set as 3rd favorite at 4-1 in the morning line.
Past Performances for the race can be found here.

May 24
A King's Life
was a badly beaten favorite yesterday in the 6 furlong claimer at Golden Gate Fields. After breaking a bit slow he began to position himself on the outside, albeit four wide, for a move around the turn. He looked ready to fire but lacked the needed response as they turned for home. A dissapointing effort for King. We will have the vet look at him this morning to see if there is something wrong. A chart of the race can be found above.

May 23
A King's Life is favored for the Friday evening claimer at GGF. Late Friday racing results in a 6:15 pm post. Jockey Cedillo finished 2nd on King last time out and gets the return trip on King here. King lines up against this group well and draws the outside post which should allow him to stay out of trouble. Veteran Baze has the second favorite and it is important Cedillo doesn't get trapped in a pocket by the wily veteran. This looks like a good chance for King's second career trip to the winners circle. Past performances for the race can be found here.

May 03
Another Highland Yard runner and another tough trip. King broke well, was shuffled back and positioned near the back of the pack through the first half-mile.
With 2 furlongs to go jockey Cedillo brought him up the outside where he was cut off and ducked back in to the rail where he closed well to grab second place. We are pleased with the result but not the trip and will try and find another jockey next time out. We are pleased that King didn't fade this time out and improved his position to close well near the wire. All in all a nice race. Assuming King comes out of this race healthy he should be hard to beat at this level next time out. A chart of the race can be found above.

May 02
A King's Life is set to go in Thursday's 6 Furlong claimer at GGF. He should have every chance against this field although he needs to beat Pale Outlaw who beat King by a short length last time out. Abel Cedillo returns for another chance to ride after fading to fourth as the favorite last time out. Past Performances fore the race can be found here.

Apr 12

King worked as hard as he could dueling with Baze ridden Swiss G's for 5 furlongs before tiring down the stretch. Given the heart he shows in every race, it is hard not to think what might have been if he hadn't been so ill as a yearling. Nonetheless, he picks up a nice check for his run and will get a few weeks off before his next race. The winner of this race moves on so we will likely try King back at this level again. A chart of the race can be found above.

Apr 07

A King's Life drew post position 2 of 6 for next Thursday's $6,250 claimer at GGF. We decided to drop him a notch to give him the best chance to win and that decision looks good for the moment. King was competitive last time out at $12.5k and looks the likely favorite at this lower level. That is not to say it is an easy field as Baze has a decent mount and there is a recent invader from Santa Anita that will be tough. Past Performances for the race can be found here. We run a risk that King will be claimed out of this race.

Mar 31

After breaking well and challenging and eventually taking the lead at the 1/4 pole, King was eventually worn down in the stretch to fade to 4th only 1 1/2 lengths from the win in his first race against winners at Golden Gate Fields yesterday. King earned a lifetime high 81 Equibase speed figure and acquitted himself well. We will see how he comes out of the race and point him to another at this level or drop him a level where he would be a likely favorite. A chart of the race can be found above.

Mar 25

After breaking his maiden in convincing fashion last time out, King has drawn post position 4 of 6 in Friday's $12,500 claimer going 6 Furlongs at Golden Gate. King breezed 3 furlongs this morning in 36 4/5ths seconds, 6th of 29 at that distacne and appears in good shape for the race. It is a big step up to run against winners but they way he did it last time out leaves us hopeful. Abe Cedillo gets the mount as Catalino Martinez who won with King last time out chose to ride the likely favorite. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Feb 26

A King's Life pulled away from the claiming field yesterday at GGF after leading at every calling. He broke well fought for the lead and drove to the finish besting the second place horse by 4 furlongs. His win is a testament to the work done by O.J. as King came has come back from EPM early in his career. Assuming he comes out of the race fine we will look for a spot against winners in 3 or 4 weeks time. A chart of the race can be found above.

Feb 22
Fresh off a fast breeze A King's Life is entered in the 5 Furlong $8,000 Claimer this Saturday at GGF.
The field drew very soft and it is safe to say King will be the prohibitive favorite in the field of seven. Highland Yard has been favored twice this year and come up short, so here is hoping King can break his maiden and get us off the schnide. Catalino Martinez rides King back after finishing in the money last time out. Past performances for the race can be found here.

Feb 4
A King's Life
finished in the money in his return to the races after a nine month lay-off. Although tiring badly down the stretch he held on for a third place finish and should be competitive at this level next time out. We will always wonder what could heve been for this son of Silic if not stricken with EPM early in his life. As it stands we think he can be a useful colt. A chart of the race can be found above.

Feb 2
A King's Life has been training well in advance of his return from a nine month lay-off. He may need a race but on paper lines up well against these Maiden Claimers. He has the highest class rating in the field and did breeze a fast 4 furlongs over the weekend. Catalino Martinez gets the mount and King will break from post position 1 of 10 in this 5.5 Furlong Sprint. Past Performances for the race can be found here.

Nov 1
A King's Life has returnd to O.J.'s barn to resume training after an extensive nearly 5 month layoff at Running Horse Equine Center. This will be King's last chance as a race horse as he fights to come back from his early life ailments. He has shown some ability and has been competiive in his races and will hopefully benefit from the layoff. I haven't seen him since his return but Randy from Running Horse says he looks much better for the vacation. We will see if he can stand up to the rigors of training. If all were to go well we would expect King to be bak at the track by the end of the year.

Jun 2

King came back sore form this mornings jog. The vet can find nothing wrong and xrays were clean. We have decided to send King to Paradise Road Ranch for a couple of months of rehab and hope to have him back to the track in the late summer or early fall. He has fought hard in his all his races and we are hopeful he will right himself and be a better race horse for it.

May 22

King breezed 4 furlongs in a pedestrian 50 seconds which was 54th of 89 at that distance. King seems to have good and bad days and today not his best. He tired down the lane. King needs to progress off this breeze before we point him to a retrun race over the next few weeks.

May 9

King placed 4th in a blanket photo for 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the race on Saturday. King went off as second favorite and loomed just off the pace much of the race before fading a bit down the stretch. Given he moved up in class, tried the turf for the first time and went around "two turns" for the first time we were only marginally diappointed. He came back to the barn well and seems to have come out of the race fine. We will likley give him one more chance at the Maiden Special Weight level and a shot at the $10,000 dollar Cal breeders bonus. King earned $2,184 for his efforts. A chart of the race can be found here.

May 4

King drew post position 2 of 8 in the one mile maiden special weight race this Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. The race came up soft with three first time starters and a couple of horses which have not shown much to date. Even though we are stepping up in class, King looks very competitive here even though stretching out and trying the turf for the first time. Apprentice "bug-boy" Abel Cedillo again gets the mount and a 5 pound allowance. This would be a huge win for Highland Yards given the $28,000 purse and the $10,000 California Breeders Bonus if King, a Cal bred, wins. Given the race is on the same day as the Bay Area Brain Tumor walk it would be particularly gratifying to kick in 10% of the purse to the NBTS.

Apr 30

King did not get entered into the race on Friday May 6th. He will now be entered for a higher value race with a potential Cal breeding bonus on Saturday May 7th.

Apr 20

The Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk is taking place on May 7th. Emily's Tumor Tamer's will be out in full force and we are anxiously awaiting the big day. King is slated to run the day before the Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk at GGF. The post time has not been set but will likely be around 2pm on Friday May 6th. Looking forward to having any members of Emily's Tumor Tamer's join us at the races and hopefully ...... in the Winner's Circle.

Apr 14

We have decided to hold back on King a few weeks and run him in the MSW on May 7th. Given the promise he has shown we think giving him at least 4 weeks between races makes the most sense at this point.

Apr 9

King looks and feels good. We have decided to enter him one more time going short on April 17th. King raced so well last time out we have decided to move him up in class to try for a win at the Maiden Special Weight division. As a Cal Bred, King will get a $10,000 bonus if he can win at this level. We antiicpate using apprentice Jockey Cedillo who has ridden King in both career starts.

We saw King receive some chiropractic and Accupuncture treatment earlier in the week. He seems to have responded well and we are excited to have him run on the 17th.

Apr 2

King was all fight in the maiden claimer on Thursday. He stalked 4/5 favorite Matchabull throughout, looming large down the stretch and finishing strongly to lose by a short head. A much improved 2nd outing for King points to some decent potential. We will see how he comes out of the race and point to a race in 4 or 5 weeks time. A decision will need to be made wether we run him back at the same claiming level where he will likely be favored or try him at Maiden Special Weight agaisnt better. Abel Cedillo did a nice job on King and will be invited back for King's next trip. O.J. thinks King will be a good two-turn horse but given how close he was on Thursday we will likley try him once more at 6 furlongs. An exciting race and very close to our first "picture" of 2011.

Mar 30

King is all systems go for tomorrow's 5.5 furlong $32k maiden claiming race. Six horses are in the field and King has been installed as the third favorite at 3-1 odds. Favorite Matchabull has been in the money in each of his four races. Abel Cedillo will be on King as he was for King's debut.  We are hopeful King will improve on his second time out as he worked well last weekend in advance of the race. Past performacnes for the race can be found here.

Mar 27

King breezed a short sharp 3 furlongs in 37 1/5th seconds which was second of 24 at the distance today. This should set him up well for

Thursday's 5 1/2 furlong race. A quick review of the entries shows six horses a couple of which have more experience than King. Past

Performances for the race will be posted mid-week.

Mar 24

King's race did not fill for Sunday. The racing steward informs that the race will likely be brought back next Thursday,  March 31st.

Mar 6

King acquitted himself well in his first race finishing 5th but only losing by 2 1/2 lengths. He was very tired down the stretch and began to weave in and out a bit. The important part is he tried hard and looked very much a race horse as he gained on the field at the 3/8ths poll. This race provided a better workout and more experience than a breeze would have. We will see how King comes out of the race and likley point him right back for one more 6 furlong race on March 27th before allowing him longer races. Jockey Cedillo said King will come back and win, so we are hopeful.

For a chart of the race Click

Mar 4
King has drawn post position 6 of 6 for his debut at GGF on Sunday at 1:15pm pst. The field of Maiden $32,000 claimers includes one other first time starter. The favortite is likely to be "Matchabul"l from the always powerful Hollendorfer barn with top jockey Russell Baze who will try for his first win after finishing in the money in all four career starts. We have put solid apprentice Jockey Abel Cedillo on top of King as this allows a five pound weight advantage.

We think King is bred for longer distances than this race but wanted to get him a start. We'll hope for the best for our colt and give him a little bit of experience here.

Feb 27
King had his final work today in advance of next Sunday's planned debut. He breezed five furlongs in 1:03 flat which was 49th of 111 and fastest of the 7 that broke from the gate. O.J. thinks King will be best suited for two turn races of a mile or longer but wants to start him at 6 furlongs to get a race into him. We are likley to use an apprentice jockey "a bug boy" given they receive a 5 pound weight allowance and we can go easy on King for his first race. After all he has been through it will be great to see him race and hopefully pick up a cheque. Entries are due Thursday and we will see what we are up against. This will be the first claiming race for Highland Yard. A claiming race is a race where anyone can buy or "claim" the horses running in the race for the claiming price or 'tag". In this race the horses can be claimed for $32,000. It is very unlikely we will lose King given it is his first race. We'll post past performances later in the week.

Feb 22
King breezed 5 furlongs in 1:02 2/5ths seconds which was 29th of 75 at that distance. He veered out a bit at the end but seems to be progressing. King also received his gate licence although O.J. wants him to break once more from the gate prior to racing. If all goes well we look to be 2 or 3 weeks from King's debut.

Feb 2
King breezed 5 furlongs in 1:02 2/5ths seconds which was 4th of 11 at that distance. He worked in company again and held off his rival by a length at the wire. If he stays on track we are only about 4 or 5 weeks away with this colt.

Jan 26
King breezed his first 5 furlongs in 1:03 4/5ths seconds which was 5th of 8 at that distance. He tired at the end which is expected for this longer work. He went in company and at the identical time to his work mate. He will breeze this distance again in a weeks time as he works up to his expected debut in 4 to 6 weeks time.

Jan 20
King breezed 4 furlongs in 48 and 2/5ths seconds this morning. The work was 4th of 24 at that distance and the fastest of the twelve 3 year olds. He worked in company today and ran much better than last week. If all goes well, King will make his debut in late February or early March.

Jan 12
King breezed his first 4 furlongs in 50 and 3/5ths seconds this morning. The work was 23rd of 32 at that distance.

He swung wide on the turn which slowed his time. O.J. will train this out of him in upcoming weeks.

Jan 5
King breezed a very workmanlike 3 fulrongs in  37 and 3/5ths seconds over a slow track this morning. The work was 5of 9 at that distance.

King will likely work one more three furlong breeze next week before graduating to a 1/2 mile. O.J. said he looked great.

Dec 26
King had his first official breeze since coming back to O.J. at Golden Gate. He worked a solid 3 furlongs in 37 seconds flat which was 5th of 11 at that distance. Hopefully King will now be back on a steady breeze schedule with a prospective first race date in 7 or 8 weeks time. O.J. says he looks much better for his time off and treatment.

Dec 18

King has been galluping 1 to 2 miles daily in prep for his first return breeze early in the new year. He looked great this morning and we appear on track for Indy to make his racing debut in March.

Nov 20

A King's Life will be shipped back to O.J. at Golden Gate Fields next week. King looks great and is ready to go back in training. If all goes well over the next 10 to 12 weeks, Highland Yard will have its third runner by early 2011. We are very excited as it has been a long road for King.

Oct 05

O.J. and I visited A King's Life at Paradise Road Ranch. He looks remarkably well and much better balanced than we recall.

We antiicpate letting King take sun for another couple of months and bring him back into training in late November. O.J. remains

confident we will get our Cal bred to the track.

Aug 29
A King's Life will be put out to Paradise Road Ranch in Tracy, CA for a couple of months. King has actually trained well in spurts but continues to be plagued by sore hind quarters. Given his young age and potential to cause collateral damage if we were to continue to push him at this point, we think it best to let him grow up a bit on the farm prior to putting him back into serious training. Many race horses don't make it to the track until their 3rd year and this may be the case with King.

Aug 18
A King's Life breezed his first half mile in 48 4/5ths seconds which hwas 24 of 45 at that distance. The workout jockey said that King was much better today and his back end seems to be improving with training and medication.

June 22
A Kings Life is in light training at Golden Gate Park. It is likely he will begin official breezes a bit later on in the summer with the thought of having him race ready by mid/late fall.
